What is Speech Therapy?

Communicate clearly. Swallow safely. Think sharply.

Speech therapy — also called speech-language pathology — helps people of all ages with communication, cognitive function, voice, and swallowing. At ASPIRE Therapy and Wellness in Louisville, Colorado, our licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate and treat speech, language, voice, swallowing, and cognitive-communication challenges using evidence-based interventions.

Every patient gets a one-on-one evaluation with a licensed SLP who handles your care from start to finish — no aides or assistants running your sessions. We see patients of all ages with deep expertise in dysphagia (swallowing) treatment, post-stroke aphasia recovery, voice and speech changes related to Parkinson's disease, and cognitive-communication therapy.

We serve patients across the Front Range — including Louisville, Boulder, Superior, Lafayette, Broomfield, Longmont, and Erie — from our outpatient clinic at 1371 Hecla Dr, Suite E in Louisville.

Our Approach

Specialized, evidence-based, individualized

We use a deep speech-language pathology toolkit to design care that fits your specific needs — never one-size-fits-all. Below are the interventions and certifications we use most often.

VitalStim for Dysphagia

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation that strengthens swallowing muscles to restore safe, comfortable swallowing.

LSVT LOUD (Parkinson's)

Certified LSVT LOUD protocol — evidence-based voice and speech therapy specifically for people with Parkinson's disease.

Aphasia Treatment

Rebuilding language after stroke or brain injury — word-finding, comprehension, reading, writing, and conversation skills.

Cognitive-Linguistic Therapy

Memory, attention, executive function, and problem-solving therapy after stroke, concussion, or with cognitive decline.

Voice Therapy

Treatment for hoarseness, vocal fatigue, vocal cord dysfunction, and other voice disorders that affect daily life and communication.

Modified Barium Swallow Coordination

We coordinate with imaging centers and physicians for fluoroscopy-guided swallow studies when objective evaluation is needed.

Caregiver Training

Training for family members and caregivers in safe swallowing strategies, communication techniques, and home practice routines.

AAC Consultation

Augmentative and alternative communication evaluation — assistive devices and strategies for those who can't rely on speech alone.

When to See a Physical Therapist

Speech therapy isn't just for kids

Most people associate speech therapy with childhood speech sound problems. Adults benefit from it just as often — for swallowing, voice, cognition, and communication after neurological events. Common situations that benefit from speech therapy:

Coughing, choking, or food getting stuck when you eat or drink

Hoarse voice, vocal fatigue, or losing your voice frequently

Word-finding problems, slurred speech, or comprehension issues after a stroke or TBI

Soft, monotone voice or unclear speech related to Parkinson's disease

Memory or thinking changes affecting work, conversation, or daily life

A child's speech development seems delayed or unclear for their age

What to Expect

Your first visit at ASPIRE

Initial evaluations are one-on-one with a licensed speech-language pathologist — no techs or aides, ever. Here's what happens:

1

Discussion of your symptoms and goals

We talk through what brought you in, your medical history, when symptoms started, and what you want to be able to do — communicate at work, eat with your family, return to singing, etc.

2

Speech, language, voice, swallowing, or cognitive evaluation

Depending on your concern: standardized speech and language assessments, voice analysis, clinical swallow evaluation, or cognitive-communication screening.

3

Working diagnosis and plan of care

You leave with a clear understanding of what's going on, how many visits we expect, what to practice at home, and what's next. We coordinate with your physician if a Modified Barium Swallow Study or other imaging is needed.

4

Initial treatment

Most patients begin therapy on day one — first exercises, compensatory strategies, or caregiver education. You leave with something to start practicing right away.

Frequently Asked

Common questions about physical therapy

Don't see your question? Call 303-963-5582 or send us a message.

Do I need a referral for speech therapy in Colorado?

No. Colorado is a direct-access state, which means you can schedule speech-language therapy at ASPIRE without a physician's referral. Medicare patients and patients with certain in-network insurance plans are an exception — for those, ASPIRE asks for a physician's order before starting therapy to protect your continuity of care and ensure services are reimbursed by your insurance carrier. Read the full guide.

Does ASPIRE accept insurance for speech therapy?

Yes. We work with most major insurance carriers including Medicare, Medicare Railroad, most Medicare Advantage plans, United Healthcare, and Select Health. Call 303-963-5582 for a full list of accepted carriers and to verify your specific plan. We verify your benefits before your first appointment so you know your expected out-of-pocket cost.

How much does speech therapy cost without insurance?

Cash-pay rates at ASPIRE: $177 for the initial evaluation, $75 for a 30-minute follow-up session, $108 for 45 minutes, and $140 for a 60-minute session.

What is VitalStim therapy?

VitalStim is a neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) treatment for dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). Small electrodes deliver gentle stimulation to swallowing muscles while you complete swallowing exercises — strengthening the muscles that move food and liquid safely from mouth to stomach. ASPIRE has VitalStim-certified speech-language pathologists.

What is LSVT LOUD?

LSVT LOUD is an intensive, evidence-based voice and speech therapy program developed specifically for people with Parkinson's disease. It targets the soft, monotone voice that is common with Parkinson's and retrains the brain to recognize "normal" loudness. ASPIRE has LSVT LOUD certified speech-language pathologists. Learn more about our Parkinson's program.

What's the difference between speech therapy and language therapy?

"Speech" refers to how we produce sounds — articulation, fluency, voice. "Language" refers to how we understand and use words and grammar — comprehension, word-finding, reading, writing. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) treat both, plus cognitive-communication and swallowing.

Do you treat children?

Yes, we see pediatric patients for speech sound disorders, language delays, and other communication concerns. Most of our clinical depth is with adults — particularly post-stroke, Parkinson's, and dysphagia patients — but we welcome pediatric inquiries.

How quickly can I get a speech therapy appointment?

ASPIRE evaluates 93% of new patients within 48 hours of the physician's order. Call 303-963-5582 to schedule.

Can speech therapy help after a stroke?

Yes — post-stroke speech and language rehabilitation is one of our core specialties. We treat aphasia (language loss), dysarthria (slurred speech), apraxia (motor speech disorder), and dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) using evidence-based techniques. Early therapy improves recovery, but meaningful progress is possible months and years after a stroke.

Do you treat older adults and seniors specifically?

Yes — geriatric speech-language pathology is a core specialty at ASPIRE. We have deep expertise in dysphagia, post-stroke rehabilitation, dementia-related communication changes, and Parkinson's voice and speech changes (LSVT LOUD). We also serve as the contracted in-house provider for several senior living communities across Colorado's Front Range.
